A social media reel showing a car performing dangerous drifting stunts on a road in central Delhi became crucial evidence for police, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old man previously involved in snatching and accident cases, an official said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Anshu, a resident of Nabi Karim, was apprehended after a video of him allegedly driving recklessly in the area went viral on social media, police said.
According to the police, the clip showed the car being drifted dangerously on public roads, allegedly to gain attention and traction online. After the video surfaced online, a police team launched an operation to identify the driver.
Police said the investigation involved scanning multiple social media handles, analysing the viral footage and conducting local surveillance in the area. ''Using technical inputs and conventional policing methods, the team eventually traced the accused to Nabi Karim,'' the officer said.
The accused was identified after sustained technical surveillance and verification of social media accounts linked to the viral video.
During the investigation, police also found that Anshu had previously been involved in snatching and accident-related cases, he said.
The car used in the stunt was seized and the accused was apprehended. An FIR under section 281 (rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Nabi Karim police station.
Police said such acts not only endanger the lives of pedestrians and commuters but also encourage reckless behaviour among youngsters seeking online fame.
''Roads are not racing tracks and social media popularity is not worth risking human lives,'' the officer said.
