Parliamentary Panel Probes Net Neutrality Amid Concerns Over Digital Inequality
The Parliamentary Standing Committee, led by Nishikant Dubey, plans to summon major digital platforms like Meta, Google, and Amazon to investigate net neutrality and equal internet access. Concerns have arisen over whether telecom operators and digital platforms prioritize specific users, potentially violating consumer protection laws.
In a move to address digital inequality, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by Nishikant Dubey, is calling on major digital and social media platforms as part of its examination into net neutrality. The committee's focus is on ensuring equal internet access for all of India's 140 crore users, as mandated by consumer protection laws.
Dubey, speaking after a May 26 panel meeting, highlighted concerns about potential preferential treatment by telecom operators and digital platforms for post-paid and paying customers. The discussion included a detailed briefing by the Department of Telecommunications and TRAI on net neutrality and consumer rights in the telecom sector.
Although the committee has not reached a conclusion, it remains vigilant about issues like 'network slicing,' which could compromise non-discriminatory internet usage. Dubey emphasized that scrutiny would extend to tech giants like Google and Amazon, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining neutrality and fairness online.
