Global Stock Markets React as India Marks Bakri Id Holiday
Indian stock markets paused for the Bakri Id holiday, but global markets saw varied movements. Most Asian markets faced selling pressures, while the US markets closed with modest gains. Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainties continue to influence investor sentiment worldwide.
On Thursday, domestic stock markets in India remained shuttered in observance of the Bakri Id holiday, according to the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The holiday additionally affected both equity and derivative segments, which will see trading resume on Friday.
Mutual to stock markets, commodity markets also experienced closures during the morning trading until reopening scheduled for 5 PM. The holiday also brought a halt to the instant fund withdrawal facility from trading accounts for the duration of the market closure.
While Indian markets took a break, several major Asian markets found themselves under selling pressure. Japan's Nikkei 225 index saw a slight dip of 0.03%, while Singapore's Straits Times index fell 0.23%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 1.47% during early trading. Conversely, Taiwan's weighted index emerged as the sole bright spot in major Asian markets, inching upward by more than 1%.
Continued geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuations in crude oil prices added to the general air of caution across global markets. Brent crude was reported trading at approximately USD 96 per barrel, a rise of 1.76% on Thursday, thereby contributing to elevated energy prices that affect inflation and broader economic landscapes.
Across the Atlantic, U.S. markets demonstrated resilience, with Wall Street indices posting modest advances. The S&P 500 posted a negligible gain of 0.02%, while the Nasdaq rose by 0.07%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average scored a 0.36% increase.
Investors worldwide continue to vigilantly observe the ongoing geopolitical climate and crude oil price movements, which will likely guide future activities in both equities and commodities markets.
