The fire occurred in an Amtrak train car within the Hudson River tunnels, resulting in damage to overhead wires and prompting temporary suspension of Long Island Rail Road service. New Jersey Transit announced impacts likely to persist through the morning. Meanwhile, Amtrak halted service until at least noon to carry out necessary maintenance after the blaze was put out, warning of long delays for trains traveling north.
Fire officials stated that about 100 firefighters responded to the incident, with two of the injured taken to a hospital. Penn Station, a critical transportation hub serving approximately 600,000 passengers each day, dealt with the aftermath as investigations began to determine the cause of the fire.
