India's Export Surge Amidst U.S.-Iran Peace Agreement and Ongoing Trade Talks

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal has expressed optimism over the recent peace agreement between the United States and Iran, foreseeing it as a harbinger of stability for the West Asian region. This development arrives as India celebrates one of its strongest monthly export performances in years, according to trade data released for May 2026.
Agrawal emphasized the importance of a sustainable agreement, echoing sentiments shared by the Prime Minister and stressing the need for lasting peace. Regarding ongoing U.S. Section 301 trade investigations, he confirmed India's active engagement with the U.S., awaiting outcomes while presenting its position through established diplomatic channels.
On the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement, he announced that the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) would visit India for crucial discussions later this month. These talks aim to finalize the trade deal's framework, a development likely to address broader trade concerns, including issues under Section 301.
Simultaneously, India's May export data showcased an 18% year-on-year increase, reaching USD 45.2 billion in merchandise exports. Agrawal highlighted India's impressive long-term export performance, with overall exports nearly doubling and services exports tripling over the past 12 years. In the last five years alone, India has concluded nine trade agreements with 38 countries to boost its global trade ties.
