On Monday, defense group KNDS introduced a new battle tank as a stopgap measure for France's aging Leclerc fleet. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the future of a delayed Franco-German initiative intended to create a next-gen tank.

The launch, occurring at the Eurosatory exhibition near Paris, follows the scrapping of the joint FCAS fighter jet program by France and Germany due to disputes. The CAPINT tank, designed as an 'intermediary capability,' is aimed at enhancing French Army strength and paving the way for the future Main Ground Combat System (MGCS). Initiated in 2017, MGCS is slated to replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc tanks between 2040 and 2045.

While French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin announced an 'intermediate' tank plan due to MGCS project delays, uncertainties linger. Germany's parallel tank development and Rhine AG's CEO expressed concerns about potential funding cuts. Meanwhile, KNDS prepares for an IPO dual-listing in Frankfurt and Paris, as Germany requests safeguards to prevent technological leakage.
