The Indian Coast Guard and Navy are tirelessly working on search-and-rescue operations following the sinking of a Panama-flagged cargo ship off India's eastern coast on Sunday. The vessel, carrying 24 crew members, went under with two Chinese nationals rescued, a senior official confirmed.
The rescued crewmen disclosed that the ship listed on Friday and sank within eight minutes, prompting an urgent evacuation, Shyam Jagannathan, director general of India's Maritime Administration, reported. While chances of survival diminish sharply after 12 hours, rescuers press on with their mission.
Currently, 22 crew members remain missing, including 18 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar, and one Bangladeshi. The Ocean Winner, carrying iron ore to China, sank approximately 240 nautical miles from the Paradip port. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
