The Maharashtra Prison Department will grant special remission to prisoners who took part in an 'abhang and bhajan' (devotional poetry and songs) competition held recently at Pune's Yerawada Central Jail, an official said on Wednesday.

Remission refers to a reduction in sentence as opposed to a break from prison life.

A total of 350 inmates lodged in different jails across the state participated in the contest and the final event was held here on June 13, he said.

As per the decision taken by the department, the finalists, including the winning team, will get a remission of 90 days from their entire term. Those who were given the consolation prize will get 60 days, and the inmates who participated in the competition would be entitled to 30-day remission.

Amitabh Gupta, additional director general (prisons), said that the special remission is aimed at creating a positive mindset among the inmates. It will also help them get an early release from jail and allow them to go back to society and live a dignified life. Officials said remission of sentence creates a hope of early release in prisoners motivating them to be disciplined, and exhibit better work culture which results in their reformation and successful rehabilitation.
