Over 2.40 lakh students were enrolled in Class 1 across Kerala as the new academic year commenced on Monday following a two-month-long summer vacation.

The new academic year sees a total of 39,94,944 students attending classes, including 1,34,763 in pre-primary, 11,59,652 in lower primary, and 12,09,882 in high school, according to state education department officials.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the state-level admission festival, 'Praveshanotsavam', at Government Higher Secondary School, Elamakkara, Ernakulam. During his address, Vijayan emphasized that state-run school classrooms have become hi-tech, offering significant entertainment and learning opportunities. He encouraged students to utilize these facilities to achieve their goals.

Vijayan also highlighted the role of teachers in instilling scientific temper among young students. He reiterated that the government is fortifying public education to equip children for the new era, with state-run schools offering diverse facilities, including hi-tech classrooms, robotic kits, and innovative curricula that enhance knowledge, fun, and creativity.

According to the education department, books and uniforms were distributed before the start of the academic year. The CM added that Kerala's education sector, with its 13,000 schools, more than 45 lakh students, and over 2 lakh teachers, is part of a broader government initiative to transform the region into a knowledge society.
