Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma announced on Saturday that the state's school education board will hold two class 10 SSLC examinations from next year.

The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) confirmed the decision, which will commence in 2025. According to Sangma, the proposal to amend the Meghalaya Board of School Education Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination 2011 was approved by the state cabinet on Friday.

The initiative aims to provide a second opportunity for students who fail their board exams. 'From 2025, MBOSE will conduct two SSLC board exams annually,' Sangma said. 'The first exam will take place in February or early March, and the second will be for students who need to retake within one to two months, around May.'

He added that this move is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims to minimize the time lost between attempts, thereby supporting students. Additionally, the cabinet approved removing optional paper or 'best of five papers' from the 2026-2027 academic year, requiring students to pass all six subjects.

Other decisions from the cabinet meeting included the approval of Service Rules for the Meghalaya Public School Service Rules, the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024, and the Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
