The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) finds itself at the center of a diplomatic storm following the alleged suicide of a 20-year-old Nepalese student, Prakriti Lamsal. The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions, with the Nepal government insisting that staff accused of mistreating Nepalese students be permanently removed.
Nepal's Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, voiced strong concerns to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, urging a thorough investigation into the death and a permanent removal of culpable staff. Deuba emphasized the need for a safe educational environment for Nepalese students, while Majhi assured comprehensive measures would be implemented.
The Odisha government has promptly set up a high-level investigation committee to address the mounting tensions between the institutions and diplomatic personnel. Meanwhile, opposition leaders in Odisha have accused KIIT of racial discrimination, intensifying the call for accountability and transparency in the unfolding crisis.
