Northwestern University Secures $800 Million in Federal Funds Settlement

In a significant development, Northwestern University has reached an agreement with the Trump administration to restore nearly $800 million in federal funding that had been withheld, as confirmed by statements from the university and the U.S. Justice Department on Friday. This resolution also puts an end to government investigations into the institution.

The agreement entails Northwestern paying $75 million to the U.S. Treasury over three years, resolving complaints regarding the university's admission standards, transgender policies, and handling of antisemitism, according to both parties. However, the settlement does not imply any admission of wrongdoing, President Henry Bienen emphasized.

The university will retain full academic freedom while establishing a Board of Trustees committee to ensure compliance with the agreement. As a result, the federal government agrees to close pending investigations and consider Northwestern for future grants. Antisemitism initiatives and adherence to Title IX education rules are also part of the settlement.
