Over the past five years, Assam has seen the merging of over 2,900 government schools to enhance resource efficiency and proximity for students. No schools have actually closed, according to a statement by Union Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha.
The initiative, part of Assam's Shiksha Khetra Scheme, has integrated 2,774 elementary and 206 secondary schools. This action aims to consolidate resources and ensure educational institutions adhere to Right To Education Act norms, smoothing a path for improved learning environments.
The minister emphasized that the initiative ensures no student is deprived of education post-merger, with schools maintaining accessibility in compliance with RTE guidelines. This rationalization helps optimize teacher utilization and curbs student dropout rates.
