A Parliamentary panel has commended the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), founded by Ladakh educator Sonam Wangchuk, for its pioneering work in education and urged its recognition by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
During a recent report presentation in Parliament, the committee, led by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged pending recognition of HIAL by the UGC. The panel lauded the institute's innovative approach to education, which blends academic, research, and entrepreneurial efforts with local cultural and ecological contexts.
The report highlights the significant local and international impact of HIAL, especially through initiatives like ice stupas. However, political tensions have escalated, leading to government actions against Wangchuk and administrative hindrances like canceled land allotment and FCRA registration for HIAL amid accusations of inciting violence.
