The Supreme Court was informed on Thursday of a breakthrough concerning the appointment of vice chancellors for two prominent universities in Kerala. The resolution follows an agreement between the state government and Governor Rajendra Arlekar, effectively ending a prolonged impasse affecting the A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University and Kerala University of Digital Sciences.
Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the governor, communicated to a bench led by Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan about the unanimous decision. The apex court emphasized the significance of having vice chancellors for the functional efficiency of universities, stating that their strategic roles are indispensable.
This development came after the Supreme Court tasked Justice (retd) Sudhanshu Dhulia with recommending candidates for the vice chancellor positions. Despite initial resistance, both the chancellor and the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan have now agreed upon the selections, marking a successful conclusion to a matter that once ended up before the bench.
