The Indian government's ambitious health education initiative will see the establishment of 43 new medical colleges across the nation for the academic year 2025–26. Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel, revealed pertinent details in a written reply during a Rajya Sabha session on Tuesday.
According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), a total of 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,967 postgraduate seats, including those at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Institutes of National Importance (INIs), have been sanctioned for the upcoming academic year. The NMC annually invites applications from colleges wishing to establish new institutions or increase their undergraduate and postgraduate offerings.
The Union Health Ministry's centrally sponsored scheme prioritizes regions lacking medical colleges, aiming to boost healthcare access. Financials are divided, with a 90:10 funding ratio for North Eastern and special category states, and 60:40 elsewhere. The initiative comprises 157 approved colleges in three phases, attracting a total commitment of Rs 41,332.41 crore, with significant central funds already disbursed.
