UGC Equity Regulations Demand: Activists Speak Out Against Caste Discrimination

Activists are calling for the immediate implementation of the UGC's equity regulations aimed at tackling caste-based discrimination in higher education. Activists are urging for the swift enforcement of the University Grants Commission (UGC) equity regulations to effectively address caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions. This call was made during a public hearing at the Press Club of India, organized by the All India Forum for Equity and Samta Sangharsh Samiti.

The regulations, introduced on January 13, 2026, require educational institutions to establish equity committees including representatives from OBC, SC, and ST communities to manage discrimination complaints. Despite backlash, activists highlight the necessity of these rules to combat systemic caste issues in academia.

However, the Supreme Court stayed the regulations following concerns about their vague language and potential societal impact. Critics warn that poorly defined measures could harm academic environments and deepen social divisions.
