Paving the Way for Private Universities in Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister, Sakeena Itoo, introduced a bill for establishing private universities, aiming at maintaining academic standards to ensure quality education. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has assented to three other bills, including ones addressing discrimination and civil court amendments.

In a significant move, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakeena Itoo introduced a pivotal bill in the legislative assembly on Thursday aimed at establishing private universities across the Union Territory. The proposed legislation seeks to uphold academic standards while protecting student interests.

Adding to the legislative progress, the Secretary of the legislative assembly, Manoj Kumar Pandit, announced that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha gave his assent to three key bills earlier passed by the assembly.

Notably, these include the Jammu and Kashmir Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026, the Leprosy Discrimination Elimination Bill, and the State Civil Courts (Amendment) Bill. All three were ratified by the Lt Governor on March 31, detailing the region's ongoing commitment to reform.
