Belarusian Athletes to Return to International Modern Pentathlon

Belarusian athletes can now compete in modern pentathlon events as the sport's governing body, UIPM, lifts restrictions. This follows the International Olympic Committee's decision last week, allowing Belarus athletes to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. However, Russian athletes remain barred due to geopolitical concerns.

In a significant decision by the modern pentathlon's governing body, Belarusian athletes will be permitted to represent their nation in competitions starting next week. This comes in light of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recent move, allowing athletes from Belarus to partake in international events, including those leading to the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The IOC had previously recommended banning Russian and Belarusian competitors in response to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, using Belarus as a strategic launch point. However, the IOC emphasized that athletes should not be penalized for governmental actions, a stance supported by UIPM President Rob Stull in his recent statement.

Stull expressed satisfaction with the decision, underscoring the neutral participation of Belarusian athletes since 2023. While they will initially compete in a neutral capacity, they will soon be able to use their national flag and anthem. Restrictions on Russian athletes remain, with future participation conditions undecided.
