Pope Leo has openly criticized the surge in European military spending, highlighting it as the highest increase since the Cold War. He questioned the validity of such spending being classified as 'defense', emphasizing its betrayal to diplomacy.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, military expenditure across Europe climbed to $864 billion in 2025, largely due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and efforts by NATO members to rearm. This increase follows pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Addressing students at Sapienza University in Rome, Pope Leo urged the youth to challenge restrictive ideologies. He also expressed concerns about the growing integration of AI in warfare, citing recent conflicts as alarming examples.
