On Saturday, the Karnataka government renewed its appeal to the central government to discontinue the NEET-UG examination from 2026 in favor of state-administered Common Entrance Tests (CET). Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil emphasized Karnataka’s successful legacy of conducting fair and transparent entrance exams through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

Patil underscored that the CET model has greatly benefited students from diverse backgrounds by providing equal opportunity based on merit. He criticized the NEET process for its credibility issues, such as question paper leaks and organized malpractice, which have caused undue stress among students nationwide.

Highlighting the critical importance of medical education, Patil insisted that admission processes should be regional and accountable. The state government has formally addressed the central government to abolish NEET and, respecting federal principles, allow states like Karnataka to govern admissions through their well-established CET system.
