Alice in Borderland Season 3: Will it be renewed or canceled?

Alice in Borderland received an impressive response upon its debut, leading Netflix to renew it for a second season which premiered in December 2022. The Japanese sci-fi thriller series once again garnered a plethora of positive reviews, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the release of Season 3.

The series, which is adapted from a popular Japanese manga of the same name, follows Tao Tsuchiya and Kento Yamazaki as they navigate an abandoned Tokyo, forced to compete in high-stakes card games against each other. Winning players are awarded "visas" which are necessary for survival, as those who run out of visas are met with a deadly red laser.

Although the last showdown between Arisu and Mira, the Queen of Hearts, felt like a natural end to the story and marked the conclusion of the manga source material, the final scene hints at more untold tales yet to unfold. It appears that the story has not been fully told.

In the final 80-minute feature of Alice in Borderland Season 2, Arisu ultimately emerges victorious over Mira, who informs him that the answer will soon be revealed. The season ends with the surviving players choosing to leave the alternate world and waking up in Tokyo after a meteorite crash. Arisu discovers that his heart stopped for one minute and that he was on the brink of death. Despite not recalling their experiences in the alternate world, some of the survivors recognize one another, such as Arisu and Usagi, who reunite at a vending machine and decide to take a stroll together. The concluding shot centers on a table of playing cards, specifically focusing on the Joker card, indicating that there may be more to the story yet to be told.

Whats on Netflix reports that there is limited source material in the manga for a potential third season of Alice in Borderland, suggesting that significant creative liberties may need to be taken to generate fresh content. The inclusion of the Joker persona, a character from the manga who has yet to make an appearance in the television adaptation, was heavily hinted at through the display of the Joker card in the concluding scene of the season.

Despite Netflix renewing the second season of Alice in Borderland just two weeks after the first season's release, the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant delays in the production of the second season, resulting in a two-year wait for viewers. However, if a third season is confirmed, fans can expect a shorter waiting period. The anticipated premiere date for Alice in Borderland Season 3 is late 2023 or early 2024.
