Briton Dan Evans walked into the U.S. Open with no expectations but departed with his faith restored in his tennis abilities. His hard-fought battle ended 6-3 6-7(4) 6-0 6-0 against Australian Alex de Minaur in the third round.
Once the British number one, Evans entered ranked 184th but captivated fans with a five-hour, 35-minute upset over 23rd seed Karen Khachanov in the opening round. Though left with little stamina, he overcame Argentine Mario Navone in straight sets in the second round and gave it his all against the 10th seed on Saturday.
'Not that I fell out of love with tennis, but it's just given me a glimpse that I'm still pretty good and it's a nice feeling walking off,' Evans said. 'I came to America with no expectations and a lot of doubt, and I left with clarity that I can still compete at a higher level.'
