Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, stars of the Amazon Prime Video series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," recently spoke about their collaboration and the unique challenges of their roles during an interview with Deadline. The series, which launched on February 2, 2024, has quickly caught the attention of viewers with its intriguing mix of espionage and marital drama.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is based on the 2005 film of the same name and follows the complex life of a married couple secretly working as spies. Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the series features the couple, John and Jane Smith, as they embark on dangerous missions while navigating the ups and downs of their relationship. The show spans eight episodes, each set in different locales, adding a global backdrop to their thrilling adventures.

During the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, Glover and Erskine shared how they developed their on-screen chemistry. Glover highlighted the initial interactions, saying, "It was friendly. It was easy-going at first, but we still had our 'I’m Maya, I’m Donald' moments." He further explained that their connection deepened during a pivotal scene in the first episode, where sharing personal stories brought them closer, enhancing their performance.

Erskine added, "Yes, embarrassing stories about growing up which I think always ties people together. It was like, ‘Oh, I can say that and you like me still?’" This bonding was crucial as their characters' relationship evolved from strangers to lovers intertwined in espionage and personal conflict.

Glover and Sloane, having previously worked together on "Atlanta," brought a similar philosophy to this series—focusing on surprising audiences and delving deep into character complexities. Glover noted, "We always talked about under-promise and over-deliver. People are underestimated in general, but it’s also way more enjoyable." This approach has evidently paid off, as the series has defied initial expectations and drawn viewers deeper into its narrative.

The first season concluded with a cliffhanger, leaving fans eager for more. Glover humorously remarked on the prospects of 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2, "We don’t know but it really depends on whether or not we win an Emmy. If we win, we kind of have to do something, right?" This statement has sparked anticipation and speculation among the show's followers.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has not only reimagined the dynamics of a spy thriller but has also redefined what viewers can expect. With the potential of an Emmy win, the future of the series looks promising.
