Moidams of Assam: Poised for UNESCO World Heritage List
The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has recommended that 'Moidams,' the mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This nomination will be examined at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) held in New Delhi from July 21 to July 31. If accepted, it will be the first cultural property from northeast India to receive a UNESCO tag.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has advised that 'Moidams,' the mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A senior official from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) confirmed the recommendation.
The nomination will be examined during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in New Delhi from July 21 to July 31. Out of 27 global nominations, 'Moidams' is included under the cultural property category.
Janhwij Sharma, Additional Director General of ASI, stated that the ICOMOS recommendation indicates the site meets UNESCO's criteria. Vishal V Sharma, chairperson of the WHC, mentioned that if accepted, it would mark the first cultural property from northeast India to receive a UNESCO designation. Currently, Assam's Kaziranga and Manas National Parks hold natural and mixed heritage statuses.
