Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Monday that the state government will provide both a house and Rs 1.2 lakh compensation for residents whose homes were totally destroyed by recent heavy rains. Siddaramaiah, who visited flood-affected areas in the district, addressed media queries about allegations that the current government was favoring certain groups in disbursing compensation.
Siddaramaiah accused the previous administration, led by BS Yeddyurappa, of mishandling a Rs five lakh compensation scheme, with many victims not receiving full payments. 'In this background, our government has decided to give Rs 1.2 lakh compensation along with a house,' he stated. He emphasized the need for public cooperation in considering a permanent solution, such as relocating frequently submerged villages.
The Chief Minister noted that various districts across the state, including Mysuru, Hassan, and Kodagu, have been affected by the prolonged rainfall. Relief efforts are underway to compensate for loss of life, livestock, and property. As rains have continued for 42 days in Belagavi, a holiday for Anganwadis has been declared. All concerned departments have been put on alert for anticipated further rains next week.
