Zhan Beleniuk: Wrestling for Gold and Nation Amid Conflict

As Zhan Beleniuk trains for a second Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wrestling, his focus is often disrupted. The Ukrainian athlete, who also serves as a member of parliament, faces the daunting task of preparing for competition amid the ongoing Russian invasion of his homeland.

"It's difficult because you are thinking about your safety, the safety of your relatives, your friends," Beleniuk shared. Despite the hazardous conditions, Beleniuk and his team continue to train, often outside Ukraine in places like Croatia and Poland, as other nations avoid Ukraine for safety reasons.

Beleniuk, the first Black member of Ukraine's parliament, underscores the importance of Ukrainian athletes demonstrating resilience and national pride in these challenging times. As he prepares for his event at the Champ-de-Mars Arena, he hopes to inspire both his countrymen and global supporters with his performance.
