In a significant development, Allyson Felix, the seven-time Olympic gold medalist, secured a seat on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission on Thursday. Felix, a retired sprinting sensation from the United States, garnered the highest number of votes, 2,880 out of 6,576, cast by athletes at the Paris Olympics.

The other newly elected members include German gymnast Kim Bui, Australian canoeist Jessica Fox—who is a double gold medalist in Paris—and New Zealand tennis player Marcus Daniell. Their election marks a pivotal moment as they succeed members elected during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. One of the outgoing members is Yelena Isinbayeva, the Russian pole vault world record holder.

The IOC is capped at a maximum of 115 members, comprising European and Asian royalty, a head of state, former heads of government, sports officials, ex-Olympic athletes, and even an Oscar-winning actor, Michelle Yeoh. Among their duties, members are responsible for approving future Olympic host city candidates at annual meetings.
