Pakistan on Friday dispatched an aircraft to Tehran to repatriate the bodies of 28 Shiite pilgrims who perished in a bus crash in Iran en route to Iraq, officials revealed.

The aircraft will also transport 23 injured pilgrims back to Pakistan for medical attention, according to Nasir Shah, a government spokesman for Sindh province.

All the victims were from various districts within Sindh, Shah said, speaking ahead of the handover of bodies to Pakistani diplomats post-funeral in Iran.

Pakistan's state-run TV broadcast the joint funeral attended by both Iranians and Pakistanis. Shah assured that arrangements have been made to hand the bodies over to relatives and to hospitalize the injured immediately upon arrival.

The pilgrims were heading to Iraq for Arbaeen, a significant religious observance commemorating the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, when the tragic incident occurred.
