Bangladesh's interim government seeks to revive discussions with India regarding the Teesta water sharing treaty, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international distribution principles, according to Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser on water resources.

In an interview with PTI in Dhaka, Hasan expressed confidence in resolving the Teesta treaty through dialogue. She suggested Bangladesh might turn to international legal standards if an agreement remains elusive. Hasan highlighted the intertwined nature of Teesta and Ganges treaties, with the latter approaching its end in two years.

The Teesta agreement has long been stalled, primarily due to opposition from West Bengal's Chief Minister during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Dhaka in 2011. Despite these challenges, Hasan remains hopeful that both nations will find an amicable solution while stressing on the need for early warning mechanisms against floods in jointly shared rivers.
