Ukrainian Fashion Week has made a poignant return, showcasing war veterans — both men and women — who took to the runway with prosthetic limbs. The event, held for the first time since the large-scale conflict began in February 2022, was a powerful statement of resilience.
The headline show on Tuesday featured designs by Ukrainian talents Andreas Moskin and Andriy Bilous. Amid applause for the models, somber news of a deadly Russian missile strike in Poltava broke, exacerbating the week's emotional weight. Designer Bilous highlighted the aim of this show: to adapt fashion to the present wartime reality and celebrate the unbreakable spirit of those who have endured profound physical loss.
In the spacious dressing rooms, amid reminders of the ongoing fight, the visual narrative included portraits of service members and a display of military uniforms. The event also featured a poignant black jacket by designer Maria Starchak, embroidered with an image of the Mariupol drama theatre, a site of a tragic airstrike in 2022.
Iryna Danylevska, co-founder and CEO of Ukrainian Fashion Week, said that the four-day event aimed not only to uplift the local fashion industry but also to underscore the human cost of the conflict. "We strive to keep Ukraine's voice resonant globally," Danylevska stated, stressing the necessity of international support.
