Violence Erupts Over Vandalism of Ganesh Idol in Surat
Tensions escalated in Surat, Gujarat, after stones were allegedly thrown at a Ganesh idol during the ongoing Ganpati festival. The incident led to the detention of minors and subsequent protests at Lalgate police station, resulting in injuries and property damage. Tensions ran high in Surat, Gujarat, after an idol of Lord Ganesh was damaged by stones allegedly thrown by miscreants, police reported on Monday.
A mob of around 300 people protested the detention of minors in connection with the incident, leading to violent clashes at the Lalgate police station. Stones were pelted, injuring police officers and damaging vehicles, according to Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut.
Police resorted to baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd. So far, 32 individuals have been detained and two FIRs have been filed. State officials, including the Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, visited the site and vowed stringent action against the culprits.
