The historic Madras Race Club in Guindy has been left in shock following an unexpected move by the Tamil Nadu Revenue department to assume control of the property. The government cites Rs 730.86 crore in revised rent arrears and allegations of illegal construction as the reasons for this sudden eviction.

In a stunning turn of events, trainers and jockeys performing morning track work were asked to vacate, and around 500 horses were locked inside the stables. The 160-acre property has been a familiar landmark in Chennai, having hosted horse races and other recreational activities since 1945 under a lease agreement that has now been revoked.

The Tamil Nadu government advised the Madras High Court that it will follow due procedures, including issuing notices, before seizing possession of the land. Allegations against the club include unauthorized construction, continuation of Madras Gymkhana Club activities, and allowing a golf club to function without state permission.
