The country's food safety regulator has issued a show cause notice to a Tamil Nadu-based firm for allegedly supplying substandard ghee to temple authority Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), following allegations of using animal fat in Tirupati laddus. The controversy has spurred calls for a thorough investigation and strict action.
On Monday, a four-hour purification ritual was conducted at the revered shrine to propitiate Lord Venkateswara Swamy, amid accusations of mixing animal fats in the laddus, said temple sources. Multiple petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, seeking a court-monitored inquiry.
Stepping in, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked A R Diary Food Private Ltd why its central license should not be suspended. The FSSAI received information that the firm's ghee failed to meet standards, and has set a deadline for the company to respond.
