An electric guitar played by the late Beatle George Harrison is poised to become the star of an upcoming auction, with an expected sale price surpassing $800,000. Originating from Liverpool, the Futurama guitar was instrumental during the Beatles' formative years at venues like the Cavern Club and Polydor recording sessions.
Auctioneers have dubbed it "one of the holy grails of historic Beatles guitars" due to its unique sunburst finish and Harrison's evident fondness for its sound, despite its challenging playability. The instrument's futuristic aesthetic was a particular draw for Harrison, amplifying its allure for enthusiastic collectors.
Despite donating it to a rock magazine's prize competition in 1964, the original winner opted for cash, leaving the guitar to rest with the magazine's editor. Prior to its auction in the U.S. from Nov. 20-22, the guitar will be showcased at The Beatles Story in Liverpool and other European museums.
