Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognized as the world's oldest person, has died at the age of 116, officials in Ashiya city confirmed.

Itooka, born on May 23, 1908, was known for her adoration of bananas and a yogurt-flavored Japanese beverage, Calpis. She became the world's oldest person following the death of Maria Branyas and lived a life full of spirit, including climbing Mount Ontake twice.

Survived by one son and daughter, and five grandchildren, Itooka managed her husband's textile factory during World War II. A funeral service was held with family and friends in attendance.
