Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Indian freedom fighter V D Savarkar in Marseille, France, recognizing the site's significance in India's struggle for independence. Savarkar had attempted a daring escape from British custody at the port city in 1910.

Upon arrival in Marseille, Modi expressed gratitude towards the people of Marseille and French activists for their support during Savarkar's attempted escape. The Prime Minister received a warm welcome from the local Indian diaspora.

During his visit, Modi is set to inaugurate a new Consulate General of India with French President Emmanuel Macron and honor Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in WWI and WWII. The trip includes a tour of the ITER project and attendance at the India-France CEOs Forum and AI Action Summit.
