A massive blaze erupted in a four-storey textile market in Surat city on Wednesday morning, marking the second such incident within 24 hours, according to official sources.

Efforts to suppress the fire are ongoing, with damage inflicted on several of the building's 800-plus shops, although no casualties have been reported so far, confirms the fire department.

Just a day earlier, a fire in the market's basement where textile stock was stored led to the death of a worker. Fire officials have deployed approximately 30 fire tenders in their bid to control the situation, believed to originate from a short circuit on the top floor. Groups from the fire department, police, and the Federation Of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) are working collectively to subdue the blaze as plumes of smoke billow from the building.
