A South African female cheetah named Dheera will find her new abode at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, marking three years of India's ambitious Project Cheetah. The relocation comes at a significant juncture in India's wildlife conservation efforts.
Having been shifted from Kuno National Park, Dheera's relocation follows the movement of two male cheetahs earlier this year. This operation coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to commemorate his 75th birthday.
This milestone, part of the world's first intercontinental large wild carnivore translocation initiative, has seen cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa contribute to conservation goals, as emphasized by Divisional Forest Officer R. Thirukural. The project aims to rejuvenate the cheetah population in India.
