Historic Visit: President Droupadi Murmu at Sabarimala Temple

President Droupadi Murmu became the first female head of state to visit the Sabarimala temple, continuing a tradition began by former President V V Giri in the 1970s. Her visit included prayers at other local shrines, traditional rituals, and interactions with local dignitaries during her four-day visit to Kerala.

President Droupadi Murmu made a historic visit to Sabarimala on Wednesday, marking the first time a female head of state has prayed at the Lord Ayyappa temple.

She carried out traditional rituals, including washing her feet in the Pampa river and receiving a sacred bundle from the temple priest, amidst strict security and restricted public access.

The President’s visit is part of a wider four-day tour of Kerala, featuring cultural events and meetings with key state figures, reflecting her engagement with multiple cultural and religious communities in India.
