In a grand display of devotion, thousands of believers descended upon Shiva temples across Kerala to observe Mahashivratri. The event saw major shrines like Sreekandeswaram Mahadeva and Vadakkunnathan Temple bustling since early hours, as devotees lined up for special prayers and rituals.
To manage the influx, temple authorities erected temporary platforms along the Periyar river for the 'Balitharppanam' ritual and engaged additional priests for smooth conduct. Enhanced crowd control measures, including lighting and counters for offerings, were implemented to ensure a seamless experience for the faithful.
The night was marked by vibrant bhajans and cultural programs as devotees, cutting across age and gender lines, engaged in night-long worship. Police were present at major shrines to maintain order and safety during one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva.
