Eagle's Flight: Celebrating America's Symbol on Stamps
The US Postal Service commemorates America's 250th birthday with a special stamp series featuring the bald eagle. The stamps capture key life stages of the eagle, highlighting its role as a national emblem and conservation success story. The artwork encourages reflection on wildlife and American values.
In celebration of America's 250th anniversary, the US Postal Service has unveiled a series of commemorative stamps that feature the bald eagle, a revered national symbol. The stamps, released at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, depict the eagle across various life stages, from a fledgling to a majestic adult with its signature white head.
Since its adoption on the Great Seal in 1782, the bald eagle has epitomized American ideals such as strength, freedom, and independence. Despite once facing near-extinction due to pesticide poisoning, conservation efforts reversed the decline. In 2007, the bird was removed from the endangered species list. The stamp's designer, Massachusetts-based artist David Sibley, emphasized that the collection not only celebrates the eagle as a symbol but also its ecological importance.
Stamps have long portrayed American culture and history, but they also offer educational value. As Steve Kochersperger of the Postal Service notes, such small pieces of paper can hold immense significance, encouraging Americans to reflect on their nation’s values and natural heritage.
