Korean director Na Hong-jin has unveiled his science fiction thriller 'Hope' at the Cannes Film Festival, a project that took more than eight years to complete. The film centers on a village thrown into chaos near the fortified Korean border as mysterious entities appear.

Na revealed plans for a sequel, saying he has already written the story and is eager to bring it to life. 'Hope' features Hwang Jung-min as a local police chief, with award-winning actors Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender portraying extraterrestrial beings. Vikander's interest in Asian cinema prompted her collaboration with Na.

Na's previous works have been screened at Cannes, yet 'Hope' marks his first entry in competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or. The film is the sole Korean entry this year, competing against 21 films under the watchful eye of an international jury led by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
