Senior RSS leader Rupnarayan Sinha died of cardiac arrest here on Tuesday after complaining of chest pain during a training programme of the BJP in the city, a party functionary said.

Sinha (68) headed the Chhattisgarh Yog Aayog and had been a state BJP office-bearer.

He was in the city to attend a two-day district-level training camp organised by the BJP under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Prashikshan Mahaabhiyan, the party's Bilaspur district president Deepak Singh said.

Sinha attended all six sessions held at the Jhulelal Mangalam Bhavan on Monday. On Tuesday morning he conducted a yoga camp from 6.30 onwards and appeared completely healthy, said Singh, adding that he was scheduled to address a session titled 'Vichar Parivar' later in the day.

But at around 1 pm, when former Leader of Opposition Narayan Chandel was addressing a session, Sinha went to his room after complaining of chest pain. Doctors present at the venue conducted a check-up and he was rushed to the state-run Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences, Singh said.

He was declared dead at around 3 pm, the BJP leader said, adding that Sinha's mortal remains were taken to his official residence in Raipur.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over his death, terming it an irreparable loss for the BJP as well as the state.

In a statement, Sai said Sinha made remarkable contributions to the strengthening of the party organisation, public service, and the promotion of Indian culture and yoga.

''He had a dedicated, disciplined and service-oriented personality which will always remain inspirational,'' the chief minister said.

BJP zonal organisational general secretary Ajay Jamwal, state BJP president Kiran Dev, state general secretary (organisation) Pawan Sai and several other party leaders also condoled his death.
