Gujarat to Rebuild BJ Medical College Hostel Post Air India Crash
The Gujarat government plans to reconstruct the BJ Medical College hostel, damaged by the 2005 Air India plane crash, with a new facility costing Rs 105 crore. Some victims' families seek to preserve the site as a memorial. Tata Group will contribute funds to the redevelopment project.
The Gujarat government announced plans to reconstruct the hostel at BJ Medical College, damaged during the catastrophic Air India crash in 2005, providing new, modern accommodation at the site. The redevelopment is estimated at Rs 105 crore, as stated by Health Minister Praful Pansheriya.
The tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 on June 12, 2005, claimed 241 lives onboard and 19 on the ground. Despite this, the decision to rebuild contradicts some families' requests for a memorial, highlighting the site's emotional significance. Praful Pansheriya mentioned Tata Group's agreement to fund Rs 53.12 crore for the site's damages.
Authorities have prioritized student housing needs, initiating construction of a ground-plus-eight-floor complex with ample amenities for doctors and students. Features will include updated facilities and separate accommodations for married and unmarried residents, ensuring the plight of students is mitigated even as the memory of the disaster is preserved separately.
