Stalin's Wine Legacy: Unsealing Tbilisi's Liquid History

A wine collection once owned by Josef Stalin, comprising around 40,000 bottles of historic French and Georgian wines, is set to be auctioned in Tbilisi, Georgia. The government intends to use the proceeds to fund a wine education school, highlighting Georgia's long-standing winemaking tradition.

The Georgian government has unveiled a rare wine collection once belonging to Josef Stalin, comprised of approximately 40,000 French and Georgian bottles, for auction in Tbilisi. Anticipated funds from the auction aim to establish a wine education school, confirming Georgia's historical roots in winemaking.

Irakli Gilauri of Gilauri Wines collaborated with Georgia's agriculture ministry on this endeavor, seeking to spotlight the nation's deep winemaking heritage that dates back 8,000 years and position Georgia prominently on the global collectors' map.

The collection boasts bottles from famous Bordeaux estates, previously owned by Tsar Alexander III and his son Nicholas II, that Stalin inherited post-1917 Revolution. Enthusiastic collectors, including Victor Chen from Dallas, liken the vault's unveiling to an archaeological discovery, rich in both history and intrigue.
