During the recent Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection ministerial meeting in Guatemala, UNHCR urged for heightened collaboration and coordination across the Americas to manage the complex flow of refugees and migrants. This call for action was voiced by UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, who underscored the urgent needs faced by hundreds of thousands crossing the continent.

Grandi, having witnessed firsthand the dire conditions in the Darien border area, emphasized the personal struggles of individuals and families undertaking perilous journeys in search of safety and stability. He noted significant advancements in regional efforts to offer protection and aid, aligning with the Los Angeles Declaration's objectives which champion solidarity, responsibility-sharing, and respect for human rights, akin to the Global Compact on Refugees.

Despite progress in regularizing millions and enhancing asylum systems, Grandi highlighted the persistent challenges and the escalating human tragedy, signaling the need for innovative solutions to support the over 23 million people displaced or seeking protection in the region. “The Darien is only part of the picture, and the deep human tragedy it reflects will only grow unless we redouble our joint efforts to address underlying causes of displacement, consider protection needs, and prioritize solutions,” Grandi stated.

UNHCR remains committed to working alongside governments, NGOs, the private sector, and other stakeholders to bolster asylum and international protection policies, expand resettlement opportunities, and foster socioeconomic inclusion for displaced individuals. This comprehensive approach aims not only to meet immediate needs but also to build resilience and opportunities for refugees and migrants throughout their journey across the Americas.
