Ramesh Babu V. assumed his new role as Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on May 21, 2024, after taking the oath of office and secrecy administered by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy.

Mr. Babu V. brings a wealth of experience to the Commission, holding both M. Tech and B. Tech degrees in engineering and serving as Director (Operations) at NTPC until his recent retirement. His extensive career at NTPC involved leadership in various positions.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission: Ensuring Fair Electricity Practices

The CERC, established in 1998 by the Indian government, plays a crucial role in regulating the electricity sector. Following the repeal of the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 by the Electricity Act, 2003, CERC functions as the Central Commission under the new act.

The Commission is comprised of a Chairperson, three Members, and the ex-officio Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority. Its primary functions include:

Regulating tariffs for electricity generation by central government companies and companies with multi-state operations.

Overseeing the interstate transmission of electricity and setting tariffs for such transmission.Issuing licenses for interstate transmission and trading of electricity.

Mediating disputes within the electricity industry.Advising the central government on national electricity policies and tariffs.Promoting competition, efficiency, and economic practices within the electricity sector.

Encouraging investment in the electricity industry.

With Mr. Babu V.'s experience and expertise, the CERC is well-positioned to continue fulfilling its critical role in ensuring a fair and well-regulated electricity market in India.
