Smt. Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, addressed a workshop cum training session focused on the Pilot Survey of the upcoming 21st Livestock Census. Here are the key highlights of the event:

Organizers and Participants:

The workshop was organized under the Chairpersonship of Shri Jagat Hazarika, Advisor to the Animal Husbandry Statistics Division of DAHD, Government of India.

Senior officers from various States/Union Territories (UTs) and members of the Technical Committee constituted for the 21st Livestock Census participated in the event.

Purpose and Scope of the Census:

The 21st Livestock Census is scheduled for 2024 and will involve participation from all States/UTs.

The enumeration will take place between September and December 2024, utilizing mobile technology for data collection and online transmission.

It will cover all villages and urban wards, counting various species of animals and poultry birds owned by households and enterprises.

Data Collection and Breed Identification:

The census will collect breed-wise data of animals, with the ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) providing the latest breed lists for different species.

Techniques for breed identification in the field were highlighted during the workshop.

Utilization of Census Data:

The statistics produced from the Livestock Census play a crucial role in implementing various livestock sector programs.

Additionally, the data contributes to the National Indicator Framework (NIF) of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Presence of Dignitaries:

Several dignitaries, including Shri B. P. Mishra, Director of ICAR-NBAGR, and Shri V. P. Singh, Director of DAHD, Government of India, were present.

Directors and senior officials from various State governments, such as Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, also attended the event.

The workshop served as an important platform to prepare for the upcoming Livestock Census, ensuring efficient data collection and utilization for the advancement of the livestock sector and national development goals.
