Archegos Capital Collapse: Founder Hwang Convicted of Fraud

Sung Kook 'Bill' Hwang, the founder of Archegos Capital Management, was convicted on Wednesday of fraud and other charges by a Manhattan federal jury. The trial accused Hwang of market manipulation that led to the 2021 collapse of his $36 billion investment firm. He was found guilty on 10 of 11 counts, while his deputy, Patrick Halligan, was convicted on all three counts he faced.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein has scheduled sentencing for Oct. 28. Hwang and Halligan, both free on bail, face potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison per charge. The Archegos collapse sent shock waves through Wall Street and prompted scrutiny from regulators worldwide. Prosecutors allege that Hwang and Halligan misled banks to secure billions, which they used to inflate stock prices artificially.

The trial revealed that Archegos' implosion led to $10 billion in losses for global banks and caused over $100 billion in shareholder losses. The prosecution argued that Hwang's covert, outsized stakes in multiple companies were achieved through deceptive practices, significantly damaging U.S. financial markets and investors.
